The University of California, Berkeley’sadmission rate for the fall term dropped to 18 percent, a record low, and 98 of those offered admission got a perfect 2400 score on the SAT.

Cal offered admission to 13,037 of the 61,695 people who applied to start school this fall or next spring. Last year 52,900 people applied, and a decade ago just 36,000 asked to go to U.C. Berkeley.

That record high demand for spots at the flagship campus of the University of California system allowed the school to be even choosier than in the past. The combined fall and spring term admit rate dropped to 21 percent from 26 percent last year, while the fall rate itself dropped to 18 percent from 21 percent last year.

“The key difference this year is the dramatic increase in applications, the high demand from California students, out-of-state students and international students,” said Anne De Luca, U.C. Berkeley’s associate vice chancellor for admissions and enrollment.

Cal has been criticized recently for admitting more out-of-state and international students, who pay more, so it took care to say that it admitted people from 54 of California’s 58 counties this year. Most of them still came from the San Francisco Bay Area (29 percent), from Los Angeles County (27 percent) and from other bits of Southern California (23 percent).

The university has worked hard to increase admission of students from California, and offered spots to 9,278 residents this time around, up slightly from 9,267 a year ago.

The Central Valley is still the most underrepresented part of the Golden State at Cal, but just 2,000 applications came to the school from that area, compared with more than 11,000 from the Bay Area.

About 5 percent of this year’s admitted freshman class are from the Central Valley.

Most out-of-state admits, about 500 of them, come from the mid-Atlantic region, which includes New York, New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware and Washington, D.C.

Nearly a third (30 percent) of international students offered admission are from China, and 19 percent are from Korea.

The average grade point average for admitted students is 3.89 (not weighted with Advanced Placement credits) and the average SAT I score is 2068, with 98 of the students scoring a perfect 2400.

Since hearing they were admitted March 29, students have until May 1 to accept. Cal expects about 4,250 people to accept for fall and about 950 for spring.
